EXPANSION OF THE DRINKING WATER SYSTEM
IN LIBERIA(finalized)
This project is part of the agreement signed with the AYA to expand drinking water systems in Liberia and Nicoya and the construction of Wastewater treatment system in Puerto Viejo de Limón.
25.8 km of pipeline were built: 17.4 kilometers in the western sector and 8.4 km in the northern sector, as well as two tanks for storing drinking water: one in the Santa Ana area (western sector, on the national route 21), and the other on the route that connects the Nazareth neighborhood with the town of Martina Bustos.

UNOPS Role
Implementing agency in charge of reviewing and approving the designs for the expansion of Liberia's supply system, and contracting the Environmental Impact Study (EIA) as well as other specialized studies, construction and supervision of the work. As part of the project, social management and strengthening of the capacities of the AyA-BCIE Executing Unit was carried out.
Background
The city of Liberia has supply problems, especially in the dry season, this has limited urban growth in areas of interest to the population, as well as prevented the establishment of economic activities in areas of high potential. This project had a preliminary design, carried out by AyA during 2016 and the final designs, including a master plan for the central district, were concluded by UNOPS during 2017. The optimization that UNOPS carried out of the design allowed for expanding the coverage area and the benefited population.
Project benefits
The project expanded the drinking water supply system in the central district of Liberia, with the consequent benefits:
-
The water flow increased by 107 liters per second, meaning the current drinking water supply increased by 136%, which will benefit 12,150 people.
-
There is sufficient water pressure, which allows us to offer better service thanks to continuity, eliminating service interruptions.
-
The water has better quality and quantity so there is a better distribution for the population of Liberia.
-
Potential urban or commercial development areas have water to carry out their projects.
Geographic coverage
The project covered two sectors or components of the Central District of Liberia and surrounding areas; the North component includes the communities of Encinos, Barrio Corazón de Jesús, and Nazareth, and the West component covers from La América to Guardia, passing through the International Airport sector.
The benefited communities include a population of more than 12 thousand people. The following illustrations show the project areas.
