EXPANSION OF THE DRINKING WATER SYSTEM

IN NICOYA (FINALIZED)

This project was part of the agreement signed with the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AYA) for the expansion of the drinking water systems in Liberia and Nicoya and the construction of the wastewater treatment system in Puerto Viejo de Limón.

UNOPS Role

Implementing agency in charge of reviewing and approving the designs for the expansion of the Nicoya supply system, and contracting the Environmental Impact Study (EIA), as well as other specialized studies, and the construction of the work. As part of the project, UNOPS was in charge of social management and strengthening the capacities of the AyA-CABEI Executing Unit.

Background

The AyA planned improvements to Nicoya's drinking water system, incorporating deep wells as new sources, construction of storage tanks, as well as improvements and expansions of conduction and distribution pipelines. The project was divided into two phases known as Nicoya I and Nicoya II, each with different and complementary components. UNOPS was in charge of the development of the Nicoya II phase.

Project features

The project aimed to carry out improvements in the intake of raw water from the Potrero River (one of the current sources of supply for the aqueduct), new water delivery pipes and the construction and equipment of two pumping stations.

Project benefits

The project benefits more than 20,000 people.
The works improved driving by 40 liters per second.
The quality of the water that reaches the water treatment plant improved in quality.

Geographic coverage

The project was developed southeast of the center of Nicoya, in the sector known as Casitas with coverage up to the intake area on the Potrero River, on the property of the water treatment plant and pipelines on public roads national routes 150 and 157.
